The Chinese Arch was constructed in 1986 following our appointment by Greater Manchester Council to construct this iconic landmark

Challenge

Due the criticality of completing the core structure before the arrival of the paifang, which was built in China and shipped over to England in 3 containers in Christmas 1986, we needed programme certainty. This, coupled with the busy nature of this bustling city centre location and shortage of space within which to work, necessitated up front planning & logistical organisation.

Approach

We met with the design Engineers, local business organisations & community leaders to formulate a method of working and programme that would fulfil the requirements of all parties.

Solution

We redesigned the structural components of the above ground structure to enable us to pre-cast this element of the reinforced concrete. We then rented a temporary off site production facility from where the components were transported to site & erected on the in-situ foundations over a 2 week period minimising disruption and ensuring completion in advance of the arrival of specialist craftsmen from Beijing who used amongst other things, a traditional Chinese mortar mix said to include pigs’ blood.
